Treating Male Pattern Baldness with Scalp Micropigmentation

The majority of men will experience some extent of male pattern baldness at one point in their life, but the degree of baldness can vary greatly. Some men may experience only a slight recession of their hairline, while others may go completely bald. Male pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia, includes any type of hair loss that is not connected with a medical condition. There are different ways in which male pattern baldness can be treated and scalp micropigmentation is becoming increasingly popular since it is one of the only ways that men who are completely bald can find a permanent solution to their hair loss.

The hair on your scalp is made by your body in their hair follicles. Hair follicles are right under the skin’s surface and hair will usually grow from the follicle for three years before it gets shed and new hair growth occurs. This is the cycle of normal hair growth, but if a man starts to experience male pattern baldness, the following will start to occur:

  • Some hair follicles may slowly start to shrink
  • As the follicles get smaller, the new hair that grows is thinner than before
  • Before the hair falls out, the hair has been growing for less time than usual
  • After time, all that will be left is a smaller follicle and hair that is not able to grow to the surface of the skin

Hormones in men are part of what causes these changes to happen. As you get older, your body changes and male testosterone starts to convert into a different hormone that is called dihydrotestosterone. It is not clear why, but hair follicles are very sensitive to dihydrotestosterone and the hormone causes the follicles to become smaller.

There are different degrees of male pattern baldness and the extent of the hair loss is measured using the Norwood Hamilton Scale for men (women’s hair loss is measured using a different scale). This scale ranges from a Norwood 1 (NW1), in which there is no hair loss and goes up to a Norwood 7 (NW7). NW7 is when a man has experienced complete hair loss on the top of his head and he may or may not have hair on back or sides of his head.

For most men, male pattern baldness is not something that can be prevented. There are topical solutions and prescriptions available that may help to slow down the process, but neither are a permanent solution. Also, a prescription medication such as Propecia, cannot guarantee that the user will not experience further hair loss, and for most users, it will not stop the hair loss from occurring long-term.

Men may also opt to have a hair transplant surgery, but this is only a viable option if there is enough donor hair to harvest from. Scalp micropigmentation is the only permanent solution for a man who is completely bald, since it does not require any hair to be on the scalp, but instead applies natural pigments to the scalp in order to replicate the appearance of real hair follicles or strands.

There is no actual cure for male pattern baldness, but you are able to camouflage it with scalp micropigmentation. Scalp micropigmentation gives the appearance of having a full head of hair and you are able to completely customize it to get the look you want. Scalp micropigmentation generally requires 2-3 treatments in order to have a gradual buildup of density, and this gives the most realistic looking results. Scalp micropigmentation is a very popular hair loss treatment for those suffering from male pattern baldness.
